The e61 Institute Internship Program

The e61 Institute internship program is a great opportunity for high-achieving students to get first-hand experience of working at one of Australia’s leading economic research institutes.

Our program provides work experience for undergraduate students that are interested in economic research and are passionate about policy work that makes a difference to the lives of Australians. It offers an excellent pathway for students both looking to enter the workforce when they finish their undergraduate studies, and for those students pursuing PhD/graduate programs in the future.

At e61 we have a strong focus on applied research that is driven by microeconomic data and designed to produce an evidence base for Australian public policy. Our research is divided into broad streams, including work programs for: productivity and business dynamism, management, and economic opportunity.

Successful candidates can expect…

  • To gain real-world research experience in developing their own research questions and preparing research plans with the assistance of the team

  • To work closely with experienced researchers to carry out their plan and produce a research paper

  • To work directly with state-of-the-art micro datasets, provided by our data partners, including government and industry

Applications are accepted from 3rd year (or equivalent) students majoring in economics, finance, econometrics or related areas such as computer science or statistics who intend to complete honours or similar research-based programs.

We will support you in undertaking project work that culminates in a research paper that you will present to the e61 research team. Past e61 projects have included research on business productivity and dynamism, analysing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on young and disadvantaged workers, and the development of real-time economy trackers using high-frequency spending indicators.

We allow a flexible start date and offer a supportive environment with training, coaching and mentoring.

We offer successful candidates a paid work placement during the mid-year break or end of year break.
